Adolph Julius Viertel

I found this tribute to Adolph Julius Viertel on the Internet. He was a grandson of Tobias & Wilhelmina Schulz. (His mother was their daughter, Martha Schulz. His father was Otto Viertel.)

Origin of the Surname Hunger

My aunt, Mayme Rachuig Hause, sent me the following articles on the origin of the surname Hunger. Click on the link below. They spell it UNGER in the articles, but HUNGER is a variant spelling.

I did a little research on the surname Schulz, just for grins. It denotes a man who collects rents & fees for the local landowner. In a sense, he's the village overseer. One Web site said the English equivalent is Constable.

Bernhard Alvin Schulz

My aunt, Mayme Rachuig Hause, received the following information from a member of the Bernard Schulz line of our family. I'd heard Tobias Schulz had a brother who'd preceded him to Texas, but knew nothing about him. I'm glad to learn Uncle Bernhard's history.

Old Rock Church in Norse, Texas

(Update) Oops. Helon Knudson reminded me that the reunion this year is NOT at the Old Rock Church, but at Our Saviour's Church in Norse. You can see a picture of it on the Web site. I'm sorry about the confusion, but more details about the reunion are coming soon.)

My aunt, Mayme Rachuig Hause, sent me these old photos of the Old Rock Church in Norse, Texas. The date of the photo below is 1886. You can see a current picture by visiting the Web site referenced at the top of the right-hand column of this blog.)

This next photo is the old Norse School in 1925. Standing in front from left to right are John Cureton, Tom M. Pool & William Cureton. All three attended the school in the 1860s.

Tobias & Wilhelmina Schulz Family around 1900

My aunt, Mayme Rachuig Hause, sent me these pictures. I'd never seen them before. I'm guessing at the date. They show the Schulz family. I can identify the boys in the back row: Hugo, Bernhardt (Uncle Ben) & Bruno. I have a harder time with the girls. Maybe someone can help me: Selma in the back row with her brothers, Martha Alinda next to her mother in front, & Anna Kamilla by her father.

The second picture shows the two younger brothers, Hugo on the left & Bruno on the right.

(Update) I got this info from my aunt, Mayme Rachuig Hause. "Chuck, the daughter on the front row right is Martha Alinda and the one above her is Anna Camilla and on the far right is Selma Martha. The boys are left to right Hugo, Victor, Bernhardt Franz [Ben] and Bruno Georg. A boy andf a girl [Albert and Ella] died before they came to America."

Bruno Konrad Viertel

Here is an obituary my aunt sent me. I remember Bruno, who attended Schulz family reunions well into his later years. I tried to find a picture of him in my archive, but I wasn't successful. If anyone has a photo, I'll add it to this blog.

Notice that Bruno is a descendant of the Tobias & Wilhelmina Schulz family, but he married into the August & Henrietta Rachuig family. This is another instance of close relations between two families in the Clifton community.

Schulz Family History

Many of you may have seen this history of the Schulz family. I thought I would post it again for anyone who doesn't have a copy.
